Iranological studies by Western orientalists, motivated by diverse scientific, political, and cultural factors, have long been a significant field within Orientalism. The present study, using Al-Muʿjam al-Kāmil lil-Mustashriqīn (The Comprehensive Dictionary of Orientalists) by the Egyptian scholar ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Al-Badawī as its primary source, and employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, examines the nature of Iranological trends and activities among orientalists as documented in this notable work. Addressing the central question of Al-Badawī’s approach to introducing Iranologists, the study seeks to reconstruct the various aspects of their Iranophilia, scholarly engagement, political involvement, and linguistic interests as reflected in biographical entries. From a comparative perspective, the study also analyzes instances of emphasis or omission in Al-Badawī’s portrayal of key aspects of Iranologists, revealing incomplete or selective information. The findings show that Al-Badawī primarily highlights orientalists who were actively involved in Iranology for reasons such as academic training, travel to Iran, translation of Persian texts, diplomatic service, or personal interest in Iranian mystical literature. This indicates that Al-Badawī’s dictionary, in addition to documenting, implicitly conveys evaluative judgments about Iranologists, which appears to require critical and comparative interpretation.
